The candidate will primarily offer an independent environmental assessment role on large-scale mining related projects locally and internationally requiring approvals in terms of local legislation and international best practices.Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead / prominent role in delivering Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs),, Basic Assessments, Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and Compliance Auditing projects
  • Prominent role in delivering local and international (Africa) projects
  • Where required, provide a support role to the delivery of ESDDs in line with South African and international lender standards.
  • Financial Management on projects
  • Resource Management
  • Knowledge and application of International Standards, such as IFC Performance Standards, AfDB Safeguards and Equator Principles, are beneficial
  • Engagement with Clients and other stakeholders at the senior executive level and providing support and guidance on critical EIA and ESIA aspects affecting their development projects.
  • Key client/account relationship management, participation in marketing and business development activities, and development of proposals.
  • Where required, provide a support role to the delivery of permit compliance audits in terms South African legal requirements.
  • To work both independently and in a team.

Qualifications
  • An Honours or higher degree in a relevant environmental sciences discipline. A Masters, with a research component is preferable.
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience working in an environmental consulting environment
Key Competencies and Generic Skills:
  • 5 years’ experience in Basic Assessments, Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, Environmental Management Plans and Compliance Auditing projects and/or ESDD consulting assignments.
  • Solid experience with mining projects is a requirement.
  • Experience in the industrial, renewable energy and/or infrastructure sector is beneficial.
  • Good working knowledge of the South African environmental legislation with in-depth knowledge of the MPRDA requirements, as well as experience and application with Lender standards (IFC Performance Standards, WBG EHS guidelines etc).
  • Understanding of broader environmental and social issues (i.e. air quality, waste management, ecological, social, etc.)
  • Ability to travel in Sub Sahara Africa (outside of South Africa) if required.
  • Strong technical report writing skills, producing professional reports in fluent English.
  • Strong Project management skills.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • EAPASA Registration.
Strong preference will be given to:
  • Candidates who are able to read, write and converse in French.
  • Candidates that have published scientific papers in relevant subject matter.
